Moving? Choosing The Right Moving Boxes And Packing Supplies

Choosing The Right Moving Boxes And Packing Supplies

If you are relocating, you will need moving boxes and packing supplies. But, the truth is that most people don’t know what to buy to move their things more efficiently. Or even worse, they economize on moving supplies.

Unfortunately, when you don’t use proper moving supplies, your items can get ruined. Here is a list of the moving supplies, packing materials, and boxes you need to start a new life.

Moving Boxes

If you are moving across the country, it is imperative to select proper moving boxes. Grabbing grocery boxes is fine if you are moving across the street, but if you want your items to be safe through hours or days of driving, you need to buy moving boxes.

Please note that the more fragile the item, the more crucial it is to pack it properly. You must choose moving boxes that can resist transport activity.

Keep these tips in mind when purchasing moving boxes:

1. Avoid Overpacking

According to moving experts, a box should not weigh more than 50 pounds. Don’t forget that you will need to move the boxes yourself, even if you hire a moving company, so don’t overpack them.

2. Select Different Sizes

You will need boxes of different sizes. Follow this guideline:

  • a 1.5 cubic foot moving box can carry up to sixty pounds. It is used to pack books, kitchen items, dishes, lamps, small appliances, and fragile things.
  • a 4.5 cubic foot moving box can secure up to sixty-five pounds. It is a terrific option for larger items such as lamps and kitchen appliances.
  • a 6.0 cubic foot moving box can hold up to seventy pounds. It is perfect for packing pillows, toys, blankets, etc. Do not overpack this box as it can become heavy.

You can use a hanging wardrobe box to hang your closet items. The downside with this type of box is that it’s heavy and takes up a lot of space. It is best to pack clothes flat. This type of package can also be used to move chandeliers or objects that are better to move hanging than flat.

Packing Materials

Besides selecting the right moving boxes, you need to have packing materials on hand to save time and protect your items. You’ll need:

  • Packing Tape – It’s crucial to seal your boxes properly—the last thing you need is your items falling out of the boxes.
  • Bubble Wrapper – You’ll need bubble wrap to pack delicate, fragile items. Experts recommend wrapping objects with the bubble side facing inwards to improve protection.
  • Labels and Markers – It’s a wise idea to number each box to know where it goes in the house and its content.
  • Packing Paper – Instead of using newspaper, invest in an ink-free paper for wrapping and packing dishes and other delicate items. Packing paper is also used as a filler to full boxes. Using packing paper will prevent you from washing the dishes or items when you unpack them. Besides, it is cheaper than bubble wrap, and it provides a cushion to your articles.
