McDonalds Packaging Embraces Virtual Reality

A new innovation in packaging trends has been launched in Sweden. The infamous yellow “M” strikes again as kids go crazy over Happy Meal boxes that can be transformed into virtual reality headsets. The makers have named the McDonalds packaging, Happy Goggles.

For starters, it’s a brilliant idea if you ask me. What child wouldn’t enjoy the experience of tasty food while turning their Happy Meal box into a new pair of goggles while their at it? Is it acceptable to consider these smart boxes eco-friendly now?

As stated by AdWeek, about 3,500 Happy Goggle boxes will be made and sold in 14 different McDonalds restaurants in Sweden over the weekends of: March 5th and March 12th.

AdWeek also tells us that the original inspiration behind this packaging came from a very special Swedish holiday. The holiday is known as “Sportlov,” a day of recreational fun during which a large population of families choose to go skiing.

With this inspiration in mind, McDonalds crafted the Happy Goggles into a ski-themed game. They named the game “se upp I backen,” which in English means “watch out on the slopes.” Makers call the game both educational and fun, here’s how it works:

“The aim is to help kids understand the need to be alert on the slopes and avoid obstacles – including other skiers. We’re proud to say that it’s officially endorsed by the Swedish alpine ski team.”

Pretty legitimate if you ask me. So, how are youngsters supposed to put together Happy Goggles? With the help of parents of course! Just kidding, the Happy Goggles were designed with an easy building strategy in mind, but parents are always helpful too.

In order to put together Happy Goggles, customers simply pop out the unnecessary cardboard, followed by tearing, folding, and inserting the virtual reality lenses.

Now, here is where things get interesting. The McDonalds packaging of Happy Goggles only works with a smart phone. Yep, the fast food industry has officially found a way to connect to us on our phones.

The phone actually goes into the box for viewing purposes. Once you have inserted both your smart phone and the goggles in front of it, the game begins!

Here is what Happy Goggles makers themselves have to say about their specialty kids meal box:

It’s our mission to ensure that the World’s most famous box will continue to be magical and relevant to families for another 30 years. The Happy Meal simply must move with the times. But evolution doesn’t always mean radical change. For us it meant a bit of ripping, folding and sliding. Meet Happy Goggles – a unique VR viewer made from an ordinary Happy Meal box. We believe the possibilities are endless.

Well, there you have it! If you are intrigued by the Happy Goggles like I am, we can only hope that this test trial in Sweden goes well!
