General Mills┬áchief marketing officer Mark Addicks wants to create a digital update to the traditional “prize inside the cereal box” model. Plans include a QR code on cereal boxes that will reveal visual surprises when kids scan it with their smartphones. They have tried out the strategy on Honey Nut Cheerios boxes, which revealed videos and information on honey to consumers.

General Mills sees the Betty Crocker brand as the model for their strategy. The social community of Betty Crocker fans is engaged in sharing recipes and cooking tips, and General Mills has engaged the community by offering their own content as well as platforms for fans to share and interact with each other easily.
